Profile

A childhood operation that made him healthy and able to play sports drew Paul Duwelius toward the medical field. A surgical internship in medical school sent him into orthopedics. And his clinic’s philosophy of providing great care in a relaxing atmosphere is what guides the doctor today.

“Patients are nervous about seeing a doctor and I think you can ease their apprehension by being professional yet keeping humor in the clinic,” he says. “I don’t wear a lab coat anywhere, I introduce myself as Paul and I try to learn about a patient’s background during our initial interview.

Dr. Duwelius works primarily on adult fracture surgery of the lower extremity and total joint reconstruction of the hip and knee. He completed medical school and his residency in orthopedic surgery in Nebraska, then did a trauma fellowship at University of California-Davis before settling in Portland.

Married with three children, Dr. Duwelius appreciates his patients’ desire to resume their normal activities. “Most patients come to me because they’ve had to stop things like hunting, fishing or golfing,” he says. “A great day is allaying their fears and then following through and seeing them post-operatively accomplishing what they had difficulty doing prior to their hip or knee surgery.”
